Built in the early years of the 16th century, the Church of Sant\u2019Antonio Abate is one of the historic buildings in the old town of Agira. With its majolica-tiled bell tower rising above the rooftops and the precious artworks associated with it\u2014currently housed in the Church of Sant\u2019Antonio of Padua\u2014it represents an important place of devotion and sacred art.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Architecture and fa\u00e7ade<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Externally, the church is distinguished by its crenellated fa\u00e7ade and by the imposing bell tower, approximately twenty meters high, topped with a polychrome spire made of cuneiform majolica bricks\u2014typical of 16th-century Sicilian bell towers.<\/p>

The current fa\u00e7ade, completed in the early 20th century, features sober yet harmonious elements that blend naturally with the surrounding architectural context.<\/p>

Over the centuries, the building has undergone several alterations, visible in the stylistic variations of the masonry and in the internal adaptations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Inside, the church houses the statue of Sant\u2019Antonio Abate, patron saint of animals, venerated every year on January 17, the day of the traditional blessing of animals.<\/p>

In addition to the statue of the saint, the church preserves the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle and the Holy Innocents, brought from Rome by the monk Fra Natale Serio of Agira.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Due to restoration works currently underway, the following artworks are temporarily housed in the Church of Sant\u2019Antonio of Padua:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A wooden Crucifixion attributed to the Master of the Cross of Piazza Armerina, a masterpiece of intense spirituality.<\/p>

A 17th-century painting of Saint Andrew the Apostle, from the Sicilian school.<\/p>

A painting depicting the Archangel Gabriel and the Annunciation, by an anonymous 15th-century artist.<\/p>

A series of fourteen small 17th-century paintings portraying the Apostles, Saint Paul, and the Archangel Raphael, of great devotional value.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
